Itinerary
We start the tour next to Caffè Leonina, located in the heart of Piazza della Città Leonina, just a short walk from Ottaviano metro station. From there, we head toward the impressive St. Peter’s Square, where Bernini’s elegant double colonnades create a vast open space that can hold up to 300,000 people.
As we walk around the obelisk, originally brought from Nero’s Circus, we share stories of Vatican intrigue and anecdotes about former popes.
Next, we stop in front of the basilica’s façade to explore the hidden symbolism in the bronze doors and learn how each detail reflects the Church’s influence.
Inside, the atmosphere is striking. Michelangelo’s Pietà stands out for its youthful beauty and sculptural mastery. You’ll see why this marble work seems almost alive. We continue down the central nave to Bernini’s baldachin, admiring its grandeur and understanding its role as the centerpiece of Catholic worship.
Looking up at Michelangelo’s dome, you discover the technical challenges he overcame and why its design has inspired domes around the world.
We end the tour near the tomb of St. Peter, where we explain the stories behind the Vatican grottoes and the origins of this sacred tradition. Without descending, we finish with the tale of the monumental papal altar that crowns this revered site.
